AI shopping agent-ready listings: stop getting skipped by assistants

Updated · Ecomsellertool

Product card with structured attributes read by an AI assistant
Short answer

An AI shopping agent-ready listing gives assistants like Amazon's Alexa for Shopping (which combines Rufus with Alexa+), ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode every fact they need to recommend a product without guessing: all structured attributes filled, bullets that state specific answers to buyer questions, descriptive image alt text, accurate price and stock, and identical specs on every channel. Assistants build answers from product data such as catalog attributes, feeds, reviews and Q&A, so missing or conflicting facts make a product easy to leave out.

  • On May 13, 2026 Amazon announced Alexa for Shopping, combining Rufus with Alexa+ for US customers. Shoppers can ask it questions in the main search bar and see AI overviews on product pages.
  • Amazon Science says Rufus retrieves from the product catalog, customer reviews and community Q&A, and calls store APIs, before it generates an answer.
  • OpenAI says ChatGPT picks product results independently, that they are not ads and that its ads run separately. It weighs structured data such as price and description, partly from third parties.
  • OpenAI's product feed spec recommends titles of up to 150 characters and plain-text descriptions of up to 5,000, and rejects rows without a valid availability value.
  • Google Merchant Center takes 2 to 100 product highlights of up to 150 characters each, and its spec now also lists optional question_and_answer and related_product attributes.
  • When Perplexity launched shopping in November 2024, it said its product cards were not sponsored and that fuller product details help it judge whether an item fits a query.

What it looks like

Shoppers ask an AI assistant a question in your category and it recommends competitors, or it describes your product with the wrong size, material or compatibility because your listings are thin or disagree with each other.

What it costs

OpenAI says ChatGPT's product results are not ads and keeps its paid ads separate, so ad spend does not fix a thin listing in those organic results. Every blank attribute, vague bullet or conflicting spec is a question the assistant cannot answer about your product, and the recommendation is more likely to go to a listing that can. Keyword rank reports do not show this loss.

How Growth OS closes it

  • Audit every SKU against each channel's attribute schema and fill the blanks: dimensions, material, compatibility, use case, certifications, identifiers such as GTIN.
  • Rewrite bullets so each states one specific, checkable fact that answers a real buyer question, inside each marketplace's content rules.
  • Mine reviews, return reasons and support tickets for recurring questions, then answer them in listing copy and feed attributes.
  • Write descriptive alt text for every A+ Content image and move key specs out of images into text fields assistants can read.
  • Keep one product record, sync specs, price and stock to every marketplace, and reuse it for Google Merchant Center, a ChatGPT product feed and any Perplexity program you are accepted into.
  • Re-audit on a schedule and after every catalog change, with a person approving each change before it publishes.

Shoppers now ask questions instead of typing keywords. "Which stand mixer fits under a 16-inch cabinet?" goes to Amazon's assistant, ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Mode, and the assistant answers with a short list of products. If your listing does not state the height, you are less likely to make that list.

Amazon says Rufus helped more than 300 million customers in 2025. On May 13, 2026 Amazon announced Alexa for Shopping, which combines Rufus with Alexa+ and takes questions from the main search bar. This is a data gap, not a ranking gap: the assistant recommends what it can verify from your listing and the data around it, such as reviews, Q&A and feeds.

What does "AI shopping agent-ready" mean?

A listing is agent-ready when an AI assistant can answer a buyer's likely questions from the data you published, with nothing left to guess.

It matters more as assistants start to buy, not just recommend, which is agentic commerce. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT on its Agentic Commerce Protocol in September 2025. In March 2026 it let merchants use their own checkout and extended the protocol to carry product feeds for discovery. ChatGPT still shows Instant Checkout for some eligible products and merchants. Google's Universal Commerce Protocol powers checkout on eligible listings in AI Mode and Gemini. The merchant stays seller of record in both, but the agent still has to pick your product first.

How do AI shopping assistants decide which products to recommend?

Each assistant reads different sources, but all of them lean on structured product data.

AssistantWhere it gets product factsWhat you control
Alexa for Shopping (Rufus plus Alexa+)Product catalog, customer reviews, community Q&A, Amazon store APIs, the webAttributes, title, bullets, A+ text and alt text, images, stock
ChatGPT shoppingStructured price and description data, partly from third parties; public reviewsProduct feed through the Agentic Commerce Protocol, Shopify Catalog, your site's product data
Perplexity shoppingProduct specs from merchants and platform integrations such as Shopify (per its 2024 launch)Merchant Program data if accepted, your site's product data
Google AI Mode and GeminiThe Shopping Graph, fed by Merchant CenterFeed attributes: highlights, product details, GTIN, images, question_and_answer, related_product

Google put its Shopping Graph at over 50 billion listings in November 2025 and said it refreshes 2 billion of them every hour.

Why do good products get skipped by AI assistants?

Usually for one of five reasons:

  • Blank attributes. Material, dimensions or compatibility fields are empty, so "fits a 16-inch cabinet" has nothing to match.
  • Slogan bullets. "Premium quality you'll love" answers nothing. "Stainless steel bowl, 5 quarts, dishwasher safe" answers three questions.
  • Specs trapped in images. Dimensions that only appear in an infographic may be missed by a text model unless the same facts sit in text fields or alt text.
  • Unanswered questions. The same question keeps appearing in reviews and support tickets but never in the listing.
  • Conflicting facts across channels. Amazon says 12 inches, Shopify says 30 cm, Walmart has no size. Disagreement gives the assistant a reason to pick someone else.

Stock is data too. When several merchants sell the same product, ChatGPT orders them partly by availability, so a listing that keeps selling out can lose the sale even with perfect copy. That is why this gap sits next to stockouts.

How do you optimize Amazon listings for Rufus and Alexa for Shopping?

Start with attributes, not copy: fill every field your product type offers, since the catalog hands those fields to the assistant.

Then rewrite bullets as facts. Since August 15, 2024, Amazon's bullet rules restrict special characters, emojis and some phrases such as refund-related promises. Amazon's own listing tips add: be specific, write numbers as numerals, and leave out pricing, promotions and company information.

In A+ Content, Amazon's guidance is to write descriptive alt text for every uploaded image, use each module's text fields, and limit text embedded in images.

How do you get products into ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode?

  • ChatGPT. Shopify merchants are included through Shopify Catalog. Others share product feeds through the Agentic Commerce Protocol, by applying for direct feed access or through providers such as Salesforce and Stripe. The feed spec recommends titles of up to 150 characters and plain-text descriptions of up to 5,000, and requires a real brand and an explicit availability value.
  • Perplexity. Its Merchant Program, launched free for large retailers in November 2024, was set up to take product specs directly, and Perplexity said then that fuller details raise the chance of being recommended. Since November 2025 it has offered in-app checkout through PayPal, with the retailer as merchant of record.
  • Google AI Mode. Merchant Center feeds the Shopping Graph. Use 2 to 100 product highlights of up to 150 characters, structured product details, and images without promotional text or watermarks. Google announced conversational attributes in January 2026, and the spec now lists optional question_and_answer and related_product (accessories, substitutes, parts) fields.

How does Growth OS close the gap?

Ecomsellertool Growth OS runs listings as one system on your own accounts. Its listings module is built to:

  1. Audit. Pull live listings through marketplace APIs and check each SKU for blank attributes and bullets that state nothing specific.
  2. Collect questions. Group recurring questions per product from reviews, return reasons and support tickets your team connects or exports.
  3. Rewrite. Draft attributes, bullets and descriptions that answer those questions within each channel's rules.
  4. Approve and publish. Your team approves each change before the agent publishes it.
  5. Sync. Push one product record to every marketplace and rerun the audit after catalog changes.

The listing agents come from Grow8, where AI agents audit, rewrite and publish listings. The catalog layer draws on Ecom Global, built for 100M+ products across 20+ marketplaces. You keep your data and own the custom code we build; the Growth OS base is licensed to you. For the software on its own, see AI listing optimization software.

Frequently asked questions

Is Amazon still using Rufus?

Yes, as part of Alexa for Shopping. On May 13, 2026 Amazon announced that it was combining what Rufus knows about products with Alexa+ personalization, rolling out to US customers over the following week. Listing work that helped with Rufus still applies.

How do I optimize my Amazon listings for AI shopping assistants?

Fill every attribute your product type allows, write bullets as specific facts rather than slogans, add descriptive alt text to A+ images and keep specs in text rather than baked into images. Then answer the questions that keep showing up in your reviews and support inbox.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT or Perplexity product results?

Not in the organic results. OpenAI says ChatGPT chooses product results independently and they are not ads, but it sells ChatGPT Ads as a separate channel. Since September 2026 Shopify merchants can run them through a Shopify app, first in the US and from September 23 in other markets where ChatGPT Ads run. Perplexity said at its 2024 shopping launch that its product cards are not sponsored, and in February 2026 the Financial Times reported that it had phased out the sponsored answers it began testing in 2024, with no plans to bring ads back. In both, organic visibility comes from accurate, complete product data.

What is agentic commerce?

Agentic commerce is shopping where an AI agent researches products and can complete the purchase for the shopper after they confirm. OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol and Google's Universal Commerce Protocol both keep the merchant as the seller of record.

What is the best tool for optimizing my Amazon listing?

It depends on your catalog and channels. Look for a tool that audits every SKU against its category's attribute requirements, rewrites within Amazon's content rules, and keeps the same facts on every channel you sell on. Grow8, the AI listing agents behind Growth OS, is built to audit, rewrite and publish listings, with your team approving each change.
