How Indian brands sell globally, and at home, on Amazon and Flipkart

Updated · Ecomsellertool

Short answer

Many Indian brands sell abroad through Amazon Global Selling, which Amazon says opens 18+ of its marketplaces, including the US, UK and UAE, while selling at home on Amazon.in and Flipkart, which ask most sellers for a GSTIN. Exporting goods needs an Importer Exporter Code from DGFT, which matches your PAN and must be confirmed every April to June, plus an AD code from your bank. Exports are zero-rated under GST, so you can ship under a Letter of Undertaking without paying IGST.

  • An Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is a 10-character code, the same as the entity's PAN, issued online by DGFT and needed to export goods unless a specific exemption applies.
  • IEC holders must update or confirm their details online every year between April and June; an IEC that is not updated in that window is deactivated.
  • Under GST, exports are zero-rated: you can ship under bond or Letter of Undertaking without paying IGST and claim unused input tax credit, or, for all but a few excluded goods, pay IGST and claim it back.
  • Amazon says Global Selling lets Indian exporters list in 18+ Amazon marketplaces, fulfilled through FBA, merchant-fulfilled shipping or Amazon's SEND carrier service for inventory.
  • RBI allows nine months from the date of export to realise and repatriate export proceeds, or fifteen months from shipment for goods exported to a warehouse established outside India.
  • Foreign Trade Policy 2023 sets no per-consignment value limit on exports by courier and provides for Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras that work with Foreign Post Offices on postal ecommerce exports.

This page is general information, not tax, legal or foreign exchange advice. GST, customs, export realisation and destination-country tax outcomes depend on your entity, products, shipping mode and buyers. Confirm your position with a chartered accountant, a customs broker or the relevant authority before you register, file an LUT or ship.

Can you sell on Amazon Global Selling from India?

Yes. Amazon Global Selling is Amazon's export program for Indian sellers, and Amazon says it opens 18+ of its marketplaces, including the US, UK, Germany, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Australia. You register in Seller Central with ID proof, address proof and a card that works for international transactions, then list store by store.

Listing is the easy part. Whether exports pay depends on paperwork, tax, logistics and how fast money comes home.

How does GST work on goods you export through Amazon?

Exports are zero-rated under GST, and CBIC's guidance gives two routes:

  • Under bond or LUT. Ship without paying IGST, then claim a refund of the input tax credit you could not use.
  • On payment of IGST. Pay IGST on the export. The shipping bill is treated as the refund application once the export manifest is filed and your return is valid. Since October 2023, section 16(4) of the IGST Act lets the government notify which classes of exporters and goods may use this route. The current notification allows all goods except a short list, including pan masala, tobacco products and some mint oils.

On both routes, GST invoice details go on the shipping bill. The LUT route avoids paying IGST upfront and waiting for a refund, which helps working capital.

Destination taxes are separate: holding stock in the UK or the UAE can bring VAT registration duties; see our UK and UAE guides.

How should an Indian exporter ship: FBA, courier or India Post?

There are three routes, often combined:

  • FBA abroad. You send stock in bulk to Amazon fulfilment centres abroad, and Amazon picks, packs, delivers and handles customer service. SEND is Amazon's cross-border carrier option for that inventory. The cost is a long inbound path: freight, customs, then receiving.
  • Merchant-fulfilled parcels by courier. You ship each order from India. Foreign Trade Policy 2023 sets no value limit per consignment for courier exports.
  • India Post. Foreign Trade Policy 2023 provides for Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras across the country that link to Foreign Post Offices, so artisans, weavers and MSMEs in inland regions can reach buyers abroad by post.

Destination rules change the math. The US suspended duty-free de minimis treatment for low-value shipments from every country on August 29, 2025, a February 2026 order kept it suspended, and CBP rules made the suspension indefinite for courier and other non-postal shipments from June 24, 2026 and for mail from July 24, 2026. Price that duty into every merchant-fulfilled US order before you choose parcels over FBA stock.

How does export money come back to India?

Amazon pays out in INR or an international currency, as you choose. RBI's master direction sets the clock: export proceeds must be realised and repatriated within nine months of the export date, or within fifteen months of the shipment date for goods exported to a warehouse established outside India. Ask your AD bank whether stock you send to FBA counts as such a warehouse; until it confirms, plan on nine months.

Banks report export receipts to RBI's Export Data Processing and Monitoring System. So keep every marketplace settlement traceable to the shipments it pays for, rather than reconciling at year end.

Should you sell on Amazon.in and Flipkart at the same time?

Often, yes, because the home market can fund the export push. Amazon.in asks for GST registration, PAN and a bank account. Flipkart asks for a GSTIN in most categories, except exempt ones such as books; see our Flipkart guide.

The risk is one stock pool split across domestic warehouses, two marketplaces and FBA abroad. A unit committed to a US inbound shipment cannot fill a Flipkart order, and a spreadsheet rarely shows that in time.

How does Growth OS run India and export channels together?

Ecomsellertool Growth OS is deployed on your own accounts and connects Amazon.in, Flipkart and each Global Selling store to one catalog and one stock view:

  1. Listings and catalog. One master catalog pushed to every store with per-channel rules, plus AI listing audits and rewrites.
  2. Pricing and stock sync. Prices, stock and content kept consistent across Amazon.in, Flipkart and each overseas store.
  3. Replenishment. Days of cover and reorder points per SKU and channel from real lead times, so domestic stock and each FBA pool run on their own clocks.
  4. Orders and shipping. Orders from every channel in one queue, routed to the right warehouse with carrier selection.
  5. Reporting. A live P&L per order, SKU, channel and country, so contribution margin is visible store by store.

Export paperwork sits outside the base system. We can build a custom module that keeps invoice and packing-list data per shipment, matches shipping bills to settlements, and flags the RBI realisation deadline and the April to June IEC update.

We have built on Amazon's seller APIs since 2017 and have shipped integrations for 20+ marketplaces, including Flipkart and Meesho. Our India office is in Ahmedabad. Custom modules and AI agents we build for you are yours, with the code and data handed over; the Growth OS base is licensed to you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell my products on Amazon Global Selling from India?

Yes. Amazon says Indian sellers can reach 18+ of its marketplaces, including the US, UK, UAE and Saudi Arabia. Registration asks for ID proof, address proof and a card that works internationally. Exporting goods also needs an IEC, a bank AD code and, if you want to ship without paying IGST, a GST Letter of Undertaking.

Do I need an IEC to sell on Amazon Global Selling?

For exporting goods, yes, unless a specific exemption applies. DGFT issues the IEC online against your PAN, and you must update or confirm it every April to June or it is deactivated.

Do I pay GST on products I export through Amazon?

Exports are zero-rated. You can ship under bond or a Letter of Undertaking without paying IGST and claim a refund of unused input tax credit, or pay IGST and have the shipping bill treated as your refund claim. Since October 2023, section 16(4) of the IGST Act lets the government decide which classes of exporters and goods can use the pay-and-refund route. The current notification leaves out only a short list, including pan masala, tobacco products and some mint oils.

Is it profitable to sell on Amazon USA from India?

It depends on landed cost per SKU: freight, US duty, referral and FBA fees, returns, advertising and currency. Model contribution margin for each product before you ship stock, because the same item can earn well in India and lose money abroad.

How long do I have to bring export payments back to India?

RBI's master direction sets nine months from the date of export, or fifteen months from the date of shipment for goods exported to a warehouse established outside India. Ask your AD bank whether stock sent to FBA qualifies for the longer period; until it confirms, plan on nine months. Amazon pays proceeds into your bank account in INR or an international currency, as you choose.

Can I export small orders by courier or India Post?

Yes. Foreign Trade Policy 2023 sets no value limit per consignment for courier exports, and Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras work with Foreign Post Offices so artisans and small businesses far from a port can export by post.
