Amazon Buy Box (Featured Offer): definition, metrics and mistakes
Updated · Ecomsellertool
The Buy Box is the older name for Amazon's Featured Offer: the offer a shopper buys from when they click Add to Cart or Buy Now on a product detail page. Amazon does not publish the formula; the factors it names are total price including shipping, delivery speed and certainty, order experience, and having stock. An offer that is out of stock or priced out of line can lose eligibility, and another offer is featured instead. If no offer is eligible, the page shows See options.
- The Buy Box is now called the Featured Offer. Featured Offers sit in the Offer Display, which can hold one or more of them, each with Add to Cart and Buy Now buttons.
- Amazon names four levers: a competitive total price including shipping, fast and free delivery with a narrow delivery window, a clean order experience, and stock on hand.
- An out-of-stock offer cannot be featured. If a price is low enough to look like a mistake, Amazon may stop the offer from being featured and ask the seller to check that the price is intended.
- The SP-API Sales and Traffic report gives buyBoxPercentage by date and by ASIN: the share of page views where your offer held the Add to Cart button.
- The SP-API featured offer expected price (FOEP) call takes up to 40 SKU requests per batch and returns the listing price at or below which each offer can expect to be featured, before promotions.
- The featured offer can differ by region, postal code and customer type; Amazon's pricing API reports segmented featured offers weighted by glance views.
Definition: Amazon Buy Box (Featured Offer)
Buy Box is the older name for Amazon's Featured Offer: an offer Amazon places in the Offer Display, the section of a product detail page that carries the Add to Cart and Buy Now buttons. When several sellers list the same product, Amazon chooses which eligible offer or offers to feature.
The Buy Box is what sellers still call the Featured Offer. When several sellers offer the same product, Amazon features the most competitive offer or offers in the Offer Display, the section with the Add to Cart and Buy Now buttons. Other offers wait in the "Other sellers on Amazon" widget below it. Ads, SEO and listing work send shoppers to the page; the Featured Offer decides whose offer they buy.
How does Amazon choose the Featured Offer?
Amazon does not publish a formula, but its seller guidance names four levers.
| Lever | What Amazon looks at | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Total price (item plus shipping) against competing offers, the external price and reference prices | Pricing Health |
| Delivery | Fast, free shipping with a narrow delivery window; self-fulfilled offers can compete with FBA | Delivery dates shown on your offer |
| Order experience | Correct, undamaged, authentic items in the listed condition, charged correctly | Account Health, Voice of the Customer |
| Stock | An out-of-stock offer cannot be featured | Manage All Inventory |
Price cuts both ways. Amazon benchmarks your total price against the lowest price at other retailers and against reference prices such as the 60-day average selling price, the current Featured Offer price, Amazon's own 14-day high and the list price. To stay eligible, the total should match or beat the external price, or sit in line with those reference prices. At the other extreme, if a price is low enough to look like a mistake, Amazon may stop the offer from being featured and ask you to check that the price is intended. If no offer qualifies, the page shows "See options".
How do you measure the Buy Box?
Featured Offer percentage = page views where your offer was featured ÷ total page views × 100
The SP-API Sales and Traffic report returns it as buyBoxPercentage, by date and by ASIN. When conversion drops on steady traffic, check it first. Two SP-API features make it actionable:
- Featured offer expected price (FOEP). Up to 40 SKU requests per batch call, each returning the listing price at or below which your offer can expect to be featured, before promotions. Amazon notes it is not a guarantee, since competing offers change.
- ANY_OFFER_CHANGED. Sent only for items where you have an active offer. It fires on a change among the top 20 offers for a condition, a move in the price at other retailers, or a new winning offer or winning price.
Why does it matter for operations and growth?
Three of the four levers Amazon names are operational (stock, delivery, order experience), so a lost Featured Offer is often an operations problem, not a pricing one. A stockout removes eligibility outright, so a replenishment miss shows up as lost Featured Offer share. That is the stockouts gap. Slow or uncertain delivery promises are the order routing gap. Either way, your traffic converts on someone else's offer, or not at all.
What mistakes cost sellers the Buy Box?
- Ignoring shipping. Amazon compares total price, so a cheaper item with paid shipping can still lose.
- Racing to the bottom. Every cut comes out of margin, and a price that looks like an error can make the offer ineligible to be featured, with Amazon asking you to confirm it. Set a contribution margin floor first; Amazon's own automated pricing lets you set a minimum price.
- Checking from one address. Amazon segments featured offers by region, postal code and customer type.
- Treating it as pricing only. If share falls while price holds, check stock, days of cover and delivery promises.
- Watching one account-level number. Track it per ASIN.
How does Growth OS protect the Featured Offer?
Ecomsellertool Growth OS runs on your own SP-API connection, and its pricing, inventory and reporting modules can be set up to watch the Featured Offer:
- Events, not weekly reports. A typical build subscribes to ANY_OFFER_CHANGED and PRICING_HEALTH, so a lost Featured Offer arrives as an event.
- Margin-safe pricing. Pricing rules can carry a margin floor per SKU, with FOEP checked against it. A change that would cross the floor goes to a person instead of going live.
- Stock in the same view. Featured Offer share per ASIN can sit next to stock and inbound shipments, so thin cover shows up beside the share it protects.
- Spend in context. Reporting can put Featured Offer share per ASIN beside ad spend and impressions. Amazon stops serving Sponsored Products and Sponsored Display ads for an offer that does not hold the Featured Offer, so a lost Featured Offer also shows up as lost ad delivery.
After handover, the custom code we build and your data are yours; the Growth OS base is licensed to you.
Where should you start?
If you cannot say which ASINs lost the Featured Offer last week and why, start with the free Quick Scan in the Ops Gap Diagnostic. It works from five standard reports, including your Business Report by child ASIN, and returns your top three Amazon operations gaps, such as stockouts, with a yearly dollar estimate for each. Frequently asked questions
Why am I not winning the Buy Box?
The usual causes are an out-of-stock offer, a total price (item plus shipping) above competing or external reference prices, slower or less certain delivery than other offers, or order problems visible in Account Health. Amazon's Pricing Health page lists offers that are currently not eligible to be featured.
What is a good Buy Box percentage on Amazon?
Amazon does not publish a target. Track it per ASIN over time; if you are the only seller on your brand's ASIN, a page view without your offer featured usually points to a cause you can fix, such as stock, price or an ineligible offer.
Why do you lose the Buy Box on Amazon?
Common causes are a change on one side: your stock ran out, your price moved above a competitor or an external reference price, a competitor added faster shipping, or your price fell low enough to look like an error. For ASINs where you have an active offer, the SP-API ANY_OFFER_CHANGED notification fires when the winning offer or its price changes.
What is the Buy Box price on Amazon?
It is the price of the offer currently featured on the product detail page. In the ANY_OFFER_CHANGED notification, Amazon reports it as a landed price: listing price plus shipping, minus any Amazon Points. Compare your own total price against it rather than the item price alone.
