How to expand a US Amazon brand to Canada

Updated · Ecomsellertool

Short answer

A US brand with an Amazon.com Professional account can list on Amazon.ca from its existing North America unified account and copy offers with Build International Listings. To test demand, Remote Fulfillment with FBA ships Canadian orders from US FBA stock and the customer pays import duties and taxes. Stocking Canadian FBA adds a business number, a CBSA import account and GST/HST of 5% to 15% by province, collected by the platform or by you if registered. Prepackaged non-food consumer goods need English and French labels.

  • The North America and Brazil unified account costs USD 39.99 a month on the Professional plan; a Canada-only Professional account costs CAD 29.99 a month.
  • Amazon.ca referral fees are set by category, such as 8% for consumer electronics and computers and 15% for most other categories, with a CAD 0.40 minimum per item in most categories.
  • GST/HST follows the delivery address: 5% GST in Alberta, 13% HST in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia since 1 April 2025, and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and PEI.
  • Since 1 July 2021, a registered distribution platform operator collects GST/HST on goods sold from Canadian fulfillment warehouses by vendors who are not registered.
  • With Remote Fulfillment with FBA, Amazon ships Canadian orders from US FBA stock and the customer pays import duties and taxes as importer of record.
  • Prepackaged non-food consumer products must show product identity and net quantity in English and French; the dealer's name and address may be in either language.

This page is general information, not tax advice. Whether you must register for GST/HST, and whether Quebec QST or another provincial sales tax applies, depends on how you sell, where your stock sits and whether you carry on business in Canada. Confirm your position with a qualified Canadian tax adviser or with the Canada Revenue Agency before you register, import or file.

Can a US brand sell on Amazon.ca with its existing account?

Yes. A Professional seller on Amazon.com already has the North America and Brazil unified account, which covers Amazon.ca for USD 39.99 a month in total. A Canada-only account costs CAD 29.99 a month.

Build International Listings copies offers from Amazon.com to the Canada store. Referral fees are set by category, with a CAD 0.40 minimum per item in most categories: 8% for consumer electronics and computers, 15% for most other categories, and tiered rates for clothing, jewelry and electronic accessories.

Remote Fulfillment or Canadian FBA: which should you start with?

There are two FBA routes to Canadian Prime shoppers: Remote Fulfillment with FBA, which many sellers call NARF, and stocking Canadian FBA.

Remote Fulfillment excludes dangerous goods, restricted products and items Canada blocks from import. Returns travel back to the US, and enrolled FBA and seller-fulfilled offers cannot share a SKU.

Standard-size Canadian FBA storage costs CAD 40 per cubic metre a month from January to September and CAD 77 a month from October to December; oversize costs CAD 28 and CAD 49.

Do you need to register for GST/HST to sell on Amazon Canada?

GST/HST is charged by where the goods are delivered: 5% GST outside the HST provinces, 13% HST in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia since 1 April 2025, and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. British Columbia (7%), Manitoba (7%), Saskatchewan (6%) and Quebec (9.975% QST, run by Revenu Québec) add their own sales tax on top of GST.

Whether you register depends on how the goods reach the buyer:

  • Remote Fulfillment. The customer is the importer and pays the import taxes.
  • Stock in Canadian FBA, not registered. Since 1 July 2021, a registered distribution platform operator must collect GST/HST on qualifying goods it facilitates for unregistered vendors, meaning goods located in Canada such as stock in Canadian fulfillment warehouses. Those sales do not count toward the vendor's own CAD 30,000 threshold under this measure.
  • Carrying on business in Canada. A non-resident who carries on business in Canada falls under the normal rules and must register unless it is a small supplier, meaning CAD 30,000 or less of worldwide taxable supplies in a single quarter and over the last four quarters. CRA weighs facts such as where goods are delivered and where assets sit.

Only a registrant can claim input tax credits for GST paid on imported stock. Non-residents without a permanent establishment in Canada generally post security with the CRA when they register, unless they expect CAD 100,000 or less a year of taxable sales in Canada and net tax within CAD 3,000 either way.

What does importing stock into Canada involve?

Every importer needs a nine-digit business number and a six-character import program (RM) account, and must register in the CBSA's CARM portal. A non-resident gets its business number from the CRA first. Goods need a ten-digit Canadian tariff classification and a value for duty declared in Canadian dollars.

The preferential United States Tariff (UST) applies only to goods that originate under CUSMA, backed by a certification of origin on file and shipped straight from the US into Canada. A licensed customs broker can file and pay for you, but the importer of record still owes the duties and taxes.

Do product labels need to be bilingual?

For prepackaged non-food consumer products, the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act requires three declarations: product identity, net quantity in metric units, and the dealer's name and principal place of business. Identity and quantity must appear in English and French; the dealer details may use either language.

Quebec goes further. Inscriptions on a product, its packaging and the documents with it must be in French, and other languages cannot outweigh the French. Since 1 June 2025, generic or descriptive words inside a trademark must also appear in French. Only the product name and company name in a trademark recognized under the federal Trademarks Act can stay in another language, and a registered French version must be used if one exists. A transition rule lets some products made before that date be sold until 1 June 2027. Food labels fall under the Canadian Food Inspection Agency instead.

How does Growth OS run Canada next to the US?

Ecomsellertool Growth OS runs on your own Amazon accounts, with Amazon.ca as another store on the same catalog, stock and reporting:

  1. Listings. Pushes your catalog to Amazon.ca with its own channel rules, such as French copy, and checks attribute completeness before launch.
  2. Pricing. Syncs CAD prices and stock, with pricing rules built from each route's full cost: Remote Fulfillment fees, or freight, duty and Canadian FBA fees.
  3. Replenishment. Plans Canadian FBA replenishment on its own lead time and days of cover, and drafts shipment plans, including the first when you move a SKU off Remote Fulfillment.
  4. Orders. Amazon fulfills Amazon.ca orders. Growth OS routes orders from your other channels to a warehouse, 3PL or Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment by cost and delivery promise.
  5. Reporting. Shows a live P&L and contribution margin per SKU for each store and country.

We have built on Amazon's seller APIs since 2017; Seller7, our multi-marketplace seller OS, serves 700+ sellers across 20+ marketplaces. Where Canada needs more, we add custom software and AI agents, then hand over the custom code and your data. The same setup extends to Mexico.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth selling on Amazon Canada?

For many US brands it is the lowest-effort next store, because it runs on the same unified account and Remote Fulfillment lets you test demand without stocking Canada. Whether it pays depends on each SKU's margin after Canadian referral fees, cross-border fulfillment costs and, later, the landed cost of stocking Canada, so model contribution margin per SKU before you commit inventory.

Can I use my US Amazon account to sell in Canada?

Yes. A Professional seller on Amazon.com can sell on Amazon.ca from the same North America and Brazil unified account, which costs USD 39.99 a month in total. Build International Listings copies your US offers to the Canada store.

What is NARF, or Remote Fulfillment with FBA?

NARF, short for North America Remote Fulfillment, is the name many sellers, and Amazon staff in the seller forums, use for Remote Fulfillment with FBA. The program lets you sell on Amazon.ca, Amazon.com.mx and Amazon.com.br while Amazon ships orders from your US FBA inventory. You need a Professional plan, the unified account and FBA Export turned on, and returns come back to the US.

Do I need to register for GST/HST to sell on Amazon.ca?

It depends on how you sell. With Remote Fulfillment the customer imports the goods and pays the taxes. If your stock sits in Canadian FBA and you are not registered, a registered distribution platform operator collects GST/HST on those sales, but the normal rules can still require registration if you carry on business in Canada, and only registrants can claim credits for GST paid at import.

Do product labels need to be in French for Canada?

For prepackaged non-food consumer products, yes. The product identity and net quantity must appear in English and French, while the dealer's name and address may be in either language. Quebec's French language rules add requirements for inscriptions on products and for trademarks.
