Stranded inventory: definition, causes and removal deadlines

Stranded inventory is stock you paid to make, ship and check in, sitting on an Amazon shelf where customers cannot buy it or cannot find it. Amazon's help page defines it as FBA units with no active offer that are not for sale, or that are suppressed from search results. The cause is usually a listing problem, not a warehouse one.

The deadlines, fees and page names below come from Amazon's US Seller Central help, checked November 6, 2026. Other Amazon stores can differ, so check the help pages for each store you sell in. Amazon's Fix stranded inventory help page also notes that the Inventory Dashboard is being replaced by a new FBA Dashboard, so menu names may move.

How is stranded inventory percentage calculated?

Amazon's Inventory performance page describes stranded inventory percentage as the share of your FBA units that shoppers cannot currently buy. It does not publish the exact unit basis, so treat this as a working version:

Stranded inventory % ≈ stranded FBA units ÷ total FBA units × 100

If 300 of your 6,000 FBA units have no active offer, that works out to about 5%. Amazon shows the percentage on the Inventory Performance dashboard next to a stranded units count. It is one of the four categories Amazon says influence your IPI score, alongside excess inventory, sell-through and in-stock rate, although Amazon's IPI FAQ notes that in-stock rate is not a direct input.

Does search suppression count as stranded inventory?

Yes. Amazon's Fix stranded inventory page now classes FBA stock as stranded when a listing issue suppresses it from search: missing or wrong catalog attributes, images, vital product details or detail-page quality. This did not appear on our page at the last check on October 12, and Amazon gives no start date. Three things follow:

• The listing can look fine. The units stay buyable if someone opens the page directly, but Amazon says they draw minimal organic demand while taking up capacity.
• There is a 60-day clock. You have 60 days from the suppression date to fix the listing. After that, Amazon may remove the stock at its discretion, based on your auto-removal settings.
• Amazon's pages do not fully line up. The required removals page says units with active offers are not automatically removed, and its table does not list search suppression. The stranded percentage is described as units "not available for purchase", and Amazon does not say whether buyable, suppressed units count in it. Treat the 60 days as real until Amazon says otherwise.

What causes inventory to become stranded?

Amazon tags each stranded SKU with a reason on the Fix stranded inventory page, and its Resolve stranded inventory issues page lists every reason with the recommended action. The common ones map to a few fixes:

Many are self-inflicted. Amazon's Avoid stranded inventory issues page points to repeat causes: closing a listing right after selling out, so returns and found units strand; inventory loader files with the quantity column filled, which flip listings from FBA to merchant fulfilled; a blank battery column, which can strand stock in some categories; offers whose ASIN, SKU or condition do not match the units in stock; and poor labeling at inbound.

Labeling problems land units under SKUs you did not create, as described on Fix stranded inventory. Amazon.Found.Bxxxxxxxxx means unlabeled units, or a different product from the one expected. Create a listing for that SKU, and those units go under virtual tracking while your labeled stock is unaffected. FBAXXXXXXX.Missing# comes from an inbound shipment investigation, built from your shipment ID, and usually shows the reason Missing SKU. Relist it, or create a new listing at quantity 0 and change it to FBA.

Why does stranded inventory matter for operations and growth?

• It pays storage and earns nothing. Stranded units keep accruing storage fees and keep aging. In the US store, Amazon adds an aged inventory surcharge from 181 days, and from February 1, 2027 that becomes a higher unified storage rate.
• It can lower IPI, and IPI feeds capacity. Amazon lists IPI as one input to your FBA capacity limits.
• It blocks replenishment. Amazon will not process a shipment that contains an ASIN with stranded units. Because the block works per ASIN, a few units of a best seller stranded under an Amazon.Found SKU can hold up its next shipment.
• It runs on a deadline. Amazon removes stranded units on the auto-removal date your settings produce. The next section has the days.

How long before Amazon removes stranded inventory?

Amazon's required removals page sets a maximum for each reason and suggests a shorter one. If you never set anything, Amazon disposes of the units once the maximum passes.

Future listing sell dates and hazmat reviews are not subject to required removals. You can delay removal by 30 days once per stranded event, and Amazon emails you on the day stock strands and notifies you on disposal day.

What will stranded stock cost from February 1, 2027?

The storage line jumps at day 181, though the bigger cost can be the shipments stranded units block. Amazon's unified storage fee applies to all stored inventory and rises with age. This example is made up to show the arithmetic: 300 stranded standard-size units at 0.05 cubic feet each, the unit size in Amazon's own FAQ, which is 15 cubic feet.

October to December adds $1.62 per cubic foot, or $24.30 a month here. Those figures will not hurt on their own. A blocked replenishment on a best seller can cost far more in lost sales, so rank by what each ASIN sells before you rank by storage.

The trap is that two clocks run at once. Stranded days count from the stranded event, and storage age counts time in Amazon's network. A unit already 100 days old when its listing closes passes day 181 after 81 stranded days, well inside the 180-day maximum for closed listings. What mistakes keep inventory stranded?

• Trusting Manage Inventory. A listing can show Active there while it is stranded. Amazon says the Fix stranded inventory page is the accurate view.
• Ignoring automatic actions. Automatic relist brings closed listings back after seven days, or as few as two. Automatic change to FBA switches merchant-fulfilled listings back after five days, or within a day at zero. Opt out any listing you strand on purpose.
• Leaving auto-removal on defaults. With no settings, the outcome is disposal. The return address for stranded removals is also set separately from other removal settings.
• Reading only the percentage. A 5% share can hide your highest-value SKU. Rank stranded units by landed cost and removal date.
• Fixing symptoms, not feeds. If a bulk upload or API feed keeps sending quantity for FBA SKUs, the same listings will keep stranding. Amazon suggests a 0 or 1 day automatic change to FBA as a backstop, but the feed is the real fix.

The report carries the stranded reason, recommended action, stranded date and auto-removal date for each SKU, so the module can group units by reason and list approval, appeal and removal cases by the date Amazon will remove them, nearest deadline first. Amazon's report description does not mention search suppression, so we would check suppressed listings against the Fix stranded inventory page before relying on the report for them. Other checks, such as flagging stranded ASINs before a shipment plan is drafted or stopping a feed from sending quantity to FBA SKUs, are scoped the same way.
