Etsy for product brands: who qualifies, what it costs, and how to run it
Updated · Ecomsellertool
A product brand can sell on Etsy only if its items fit Etsy's Creativity Standards: made by the seller, designed by the seller (a disclosed production partner may manufacture it), handpicked such as vintage 20+ years old, or sourced such as craft supplies. Dropshipping and most reselling are banned. With a US bank account you pay $0.20 per listing, 6.5% per transaction and 3% plus $0.25 processing, plus 12% or 15% on Offsite Ads orders. It fits original, personalized or giftable lines with margin for that stack.
- Etsy's Creativity Standards accept four kinds of items: made by a seller, designed by a seller, handpicked by a seller (vintage means 20+ years old) and sourced by a seller.
- A seller's original design may be manufactured by a production partner, but the listing must disclose that partner and say accurately where the item ships from.
- Etsy charges $0.20 per listing, which expires after four months and auto-renews unless set to manual, and renews after each sale on multi-quantity listings, plus 6.5% of item price, shipping and gift wrap.
- Etsy Payments processing for a US bank account is 3% plus $0.25, assessed on the gross order amount including shipping and any sales tax.
- Offsite Ads cost 15% of an attributed order, or 12% once a shop reaches $10,000 in sales over 365 days, after which opting out ends; the fee is capped at $100 per order.
- Etsy's Open API v3 covers listings, inventory, orders and shipment tracking; a Seller App is limited to one active app per shop and connects only to the shop that registered it.
What Etsy requires
- Every item must fit a Creativity Standards category: made, designed, handpicked or sourced by the seller.
- Items produced with a production partner must disclose the partner in the listing and state accurately where the item ships from.
- Dropshipping and reselling are not allowed, apart from narrow exceptions such as craft supplies.
- Listings must use your own photos or video, not stock photos or renderings. Sourced items may use manufacturer images, and an original design a production partner prints onto a base item such as a t-shirt or mug may use a stock mockup.
- Personalized items must lead with a finished example, not the blank product or placeholder text, and items created with AI must say so in the listing.
- Sellers must honor their stated processing and shipping times, and orders shipped into the United States must use a Delivery Duty Paid (DDP) method.
- Payouts run through Etsy Payments, available directly in countries such as the US, UK, Canada, Australia and EU members, and through Payoneer in others, including India and China.
- Some new shops pay a one-time set-up fee, which Etsy shows and charges during onboarding.
What we automate
- Catalog mapping from your master SKU to Etsy listings and variation products, including who-made, when-made, category and production partner fields.
- Pre-publish checks that hold any listing missing a qualifying Creativity Standards basis or a production partner disclosure, and any personalized listing whose first image is not a finished example.
- Per-variation quantity sync from one shared stock position, to prevent overselling when a unit sells on Amazon or Shopify.
- Fee-aware price floors that include listing, transaction and processing fees plus the Offsite Ads rate your shop is on.
- Order import from Etsy receipts, routing to your warehouse, 3PL or production partner, and tracking pushed back to Etsy.
- Net margin per order after every Etsy fee, and alerts when an order is close to missing its stated processing time.
- Listing-fee audits that flag auto-renewing listings with no recent sales.
Etsy is not an open marketplace. It sells items made, designed, handpicked or sourced by the seller and removes listings outside those lines. For a product brand, the questions are whether your catalog qualifies and whether the fee stack leaves margin once Offsite Ads kick in.
Can a product brand sell on Etsy?
Yes, if the brand is the creative source of the product. Etsy's Creativity Standards allow four groups of items:
- Made by a seller. Handcrafted, hand-altered or hand-assembled items, or items you produce in your own workshop with tools like a laser cutter, CNC or 3D printer, from your own design.
- Designed by a seller. Your original designs, sold as digital downloads or manufactured by a production partner. The listing has to disclose the production partner and say accurately where the item ships from.
- Handpicked by a seller. Vintage items at least 20 years old, items from nature, and themed gift baskets you assemble yourself.
- Sourced by a seller. Craft supplies, party supplies, and items a production partner personalizes with the buyer's own text or image.
What does not qualify: items assembled per the manufacturer's instructions (flatpack furniture, a Lego set) sold as your own work, mass-produced items with only a stick-on added, and ready-to-use blanks resold as is. Craft kits count as supplies. Etsy's Seller Policy bans dropshipping and reselling outside narrow exceptions such as craft supplies.
The practical test: is the design yours? A brand that designs its products and has a factory make them fits the designed-by-a-seller path, with disclosure. A brand importing goods someone else designed does not.
What does Etsy charge on each order?
Etsy's fees stack. Here is a $100 order (item plus shipping) for a seller with a US bank account, before sales tax:
| Fee | How Etsy charges it | On a $100 order |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | $0.20; auto-renews every four months unless set to manual, and after each sale on multi-quantity listings | $0.20 |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% of item price, shipping and gift wrap | $6.50 |
| Payment processing (US bank account) | 3% + $0.25 on the gross order, including tax | $3.25 |
| Organic sale total | $9.95 | |
| Offsite Ads (attributed orders only) | 15%, or 12% once the shop reaches $10,000 in 365-day sales; capped at $100 per order | $12.00 to $15.00 |
| Total with Offsite Ads | $21.95 to $24.95 |
The table counts the listing fee once per sale, as on a multi-quantity listing; a single-item listing pays it when listed or renewed, sold or not.
Other lines can apply: listing in a currency other than your payment account's adds a 2.5% conversion fee. Sellers in some countries pay a Regulatory Operating fee. Offsite Ads use a 30-day click window, and if the buyer's last click was an Etsy Ad, only the Etsy Ads fee applies.
Offsite Ads matter most for pricing. Under $10,000 in trailing sales you can opt out. Etsy measures item sales (no shipping, tax or gift wrap) on the first of each month; once you cross the line, 12% applies from the next month for the life of the shop, so price for it from day one.
When does Etsy fit a brand?
Etsy suits brands whose product carries the story:
- Original designs, personalization and made-to-order items, where processing profiles set made-to-order lead times.
- Giftable products with enough margin to absorb the fee stack above.
- Small-batch or seasonal lines you want to test before committing wholesale volume.
It is a poor fit for generic private-label goods, thin-margin commodities, or catalogs that depend on reselling.
What breaks when Etsy runs beside Amazon and Shopify?
Etsy usually fails at the seams with your other channels:
- Overselling. The same unit is live on Etsy, Amazon and your store, and quantities update by hand.
- Processing times. Etsy expects you to ship within your stated time, and an unwatched made-to-order backlog turns into late orders.
- Fee drift. Prices set before Offsite Ads became mandatory quietly earn far less on attributed orders.
- Listing fee creep. Auto-renew charges $0.20 every four months on listings that have not sold in a year.
How does Growth OS manage Etsy listings and orders?
Growth OS is deployed on your own accounts. Your shop registers a Seller App, which Etsy limits to one active app per shop and to that shop alone, so the keys sit with you; if you already have one, we use Etsy's reviewed Personal App route. The Open API v3 covers the core of the work:
- Catalog mapping. Each master SKU maps to an Etsy listing and its variation products, with who-made, when-made, category and production partner fields stored once.
- Eligibility checks. Before publishing, a rule holds any listing without a Creativity Standards basis or a partner disclosure, and any personalized listing that does not lead with a finished example. A person approves.
- Inventory sync. Per-variation quantities flow from one shared stock position through the listing inventory endpoint. Made-to-order SKUs use a made-to-order processing profile for lead time and a quantity set to production capacity.
- Fee-aware pricing. Price floors include every fee in the table above at your shop's Offsite Ads rate.
- Orders and tracking. Receipts are pulled, routed to your warehouse, 3PL or production partner, and tracking goes back through createReceiptShipment, which also emails the buyer.
- Reporting. Net margin per order after every fee, plus alerts on orders nearing their processing deadline and on stale auto-renewing listings.
Etsy is one of the 20+ marketplaces we have shipped integrations for. The same multi-marketplace plumbing runs Seller7, a seller OS used by 700+ sellers, and Ecom Global, a catalog built for 100M+ products. On top, we build what your operation needs, such as AI listing agents like Grow8.
Is Etsy worth adding for your brand?
Start with two numbers: how much of your catalog qualifies, and what margin is left after $21.95 to $24.95 in fees on a $100 attributed order. If you sell on Amazon, the free Quick Scan in our Ops Gap Diagnostic finds your top three Amazon operations gaps from reports you upload. The paid Deep Diagnostic covers every channel you sell on and adds marketplace opportunities, including whether Etsy would add revenue or only add work. Frequently asked questions
How much does Etsy take from a $100 sale?
For a seller with a US bank account, a $100 order (item plus shipping) with no Offsite Ads costs $9.95 in Etsy fees: $0.20 listing (one renewal on a multi-quantity listing), $6.50 transaction and $3.25 processing. If an Offsite Ad drove the sale, add $12 or $15 depending on your shop's sales history. Processing also applies to any sales tax collected.
Can a brand that uses a factory sell on Etsy?
Yes, if the brand owns the design. Etsy's designed-by-a-seller category lets a production partner manufacture your original design, as long as each listing discloses the partner and where the item ships from. Reselling products someone else designed is not allowed.
Does Etsy allow dropshipping or print on demand?
Etsy's Seller Policy prohibits dropshipping and reselling, with narrow exceptions such as craft supplies. Print on demand works only when the design is yours or the buyer personalizes the item, and the print partner is disclosed.
Can you opt out of Etsy Offsite Ads?
Only while your shop is under $10,000 in sales over the prior 365 days. Once it crosses that line, participation is mandatory at a 12% fee for the life of the shop, even if sales later drop.
Is Etsy or Amazon Handmade better for a handmade brand?
Neither is cheaper every time. On a $100 sale, Handmade's 15% referral fee (minimum $0.30) is $15, against Etsy's $9.95 with a US bank account and no Offsite Ads, or up to $24.95 with them. Etsy suits original designs, personalization and made-to-order lines. Handmade suits makers already selling on Amazon who pass its application; approved makers have the $39.99 monthly Professional plan fee waived after the first month.
Can Etsy order fulfillment be automated?
Yes. The Etsy Open API v3 exposes shop receipts, and its createReceiptShipment endpoint accepts a tracking code and carrier name, which also sends Etsy's shipping email to the buyer.
