Selling on Target Plus: requirements, integration and operations
Updated · Ecomsellertool
Target Plus is Target's invite-only third-party marketplace on Target.com and the Target app. Brands apply at plus.target.com and Target reviews the assortment, aiming to respond within 30 days. Sellers must be U.S.-registered businesses with GS1 UPCs and brand authorization, integrate through an approved Channel Partner or a qualifying in-house API team, ship within 24 business hours on a 5-business-day transit, and fund free shipping over $35 and the 5% Circle Card discount.
- Target Plus debuted in 2019 and is invite-only; Target aims to answer applicants within 30 days, and its FAQ puts the typical acquisition process at 3 to 6 weeks before a structured 75-day onboarding.
- Sellers must be registered in the U.S. with a W-9, EIN, DUNS number and a physical commercial address matching IRS records; sole proprietorships are not eligible.
- Orders must ship within 24 business hours on a 5-business-day total transit, from the U.S., with UPS, USPS or OnTrac, and without competitor fulfillment services.
- Target expects sellers to integrate through an approved Channel Partner unless they qualify for direct API integration with a dedicated U.S.-based in-house technical team.
- Target charges no monthly fee but takes a referral rate of 6% to 15%, set by category and item price, on the discounted item price; sellers also fund the 5% Circle Card discount.
- Growth OS feeds your Channel Partner validated item data and U.S.-shippable inventory, and tracks ship-by times, returns and per-order margin on your own accounts.
What Target Plus requires
- U.S.-registered business (no sole proprietorships) with a W-9, EIN, DUNS number and a physical commercial address that matches IRS records
- GS1-certified UPCs on every item, an official company domain, and a trademark certificate (brand owners) or letter of authorization (resellers)
- Ship within 24 business hours on a 5-business-day total transit, from the U.S. with UPS, USPS or OnTrac, and no competitor fulfillment services
- Unbranded shipments: boxes, polybags and packing slips with no contact details or marketing materials
- Accept individual mail-in returns at one U.S. location and palletized store returns delivered by truck to one U.S. business address
- Fund free shipping on orders over $35 and for Circle Card holders, the 5% Circle Card discount, and free return shipping on mail-in returns
- Integrate through an approved Channel Partner (or qualify for direct API integration), register hazmat items with UL-WERCSmart and supplements with Label Insights, and supply grid-format size charts
- Finish onboarding within 75 days, fix item setup errors within 1 day and respond to portal alerts within 2 days
What we automate
- Item data checks before items reach your Channel Partner: GS1 UPCs, attribute mapping, grid size charts and hazmat or supplement registration flags
- Inventory sync that separates FBA stock from U.S. warehouse or 3PL stock, so only units that can ship a Target Plus order are offered
- Order routing to a U.S. location on UPS, USPS or OnTrac, with a ship-by timer and alerts against the 24-business-hour window
- Returns reconciliation for mail-in and palletized store returns, matched back to orders and restocked or written off
- Per-order margin after referral rate, Circle Card discount, free shipping, return costs and Channel Partner fees, by SKU
- Item error and portal alert queues with owners and 1-day or 2-day deadlines attached
Target Plus is the third-party marketplace inside Target.com and the Target app. Unlike Amazon, you cannot just open a seller account. Target calls it invite-only, reviews every applicant's assortment, and holds sellers to shipping, returns and data standards that read more like a vendor agreement than a listing form.
How does Target Plus work?
Target launched it in 2019 as a curated complement to its own assortment. Partner items show up in Target.com search results next to Target's own products, and Target says it is working Target Plus further into promotions and its Deals Hub. The partner, not Target, ships the order, handles the return and pays for the shopper perks priced out below. Two things set it apart:
- Curation. Target says it keeps fewer sellers per category and one seller per SKU, so you are not fighting other resellers for the same listing.
- Target controls the shelf. Target reviews item productivity and can remove items that do not sell.
How do I apply to sell on Target Plus?
You apply on plus.target.com with your company details and the items you want to sell. Target checks whether the assortment fits its category strategy and aims to respond within 30 days. Its FAQ puts the typical acquisition process at 3 to 6 weeks, followed by a 75-day onboarding.
There is no minimum or maximum SKU count and no monthly fee, which does not make it cheap.
What are the requirements to sell on Target Plus?
The eligibility checklist lines that tend to catch multichannel brands:
| Area | What Target asks | Where it bites |
|---|---|---|
| Business | U.S. entity with W-9, EIN, DUNS and a commercial address matching IRS records; no sole proprietorships | Home addresses, PO boxes, private mailboxes, registered agents, virtual offices and co-working desks without a dedicated office are rejected |
| Products | GS1 UPCs; trademark certificate or reseller authorization letter | Items on non-GS1 barcodes need new UPCs |
| Shipping | Ship in 24 business hours, 5-business-day transit, UPS, USPS or OnTrac from the U.S. | No competitor fulfillment services, so orders cannot run through Amazon's network |
| Packaging | Boxes, polybags and slips with no contact details or marketing inserts | Default 3PL inserts must be switched off for Target orders |
| Returns | Mail-in returns to one U.S. site; store returns on pallets, by truck, to one U.S. business address | Your returns site must be able to receive freight |
| Data | Channel Partner; WERCS for hazmat; Label Insights for supplements; grid size charts | Image-only size charts and unregistered hazmat items stall item setup |
| Onboarding | Fix item errors in 1 day; answer portal alerts in 2 days | Someone has to own the queue every day |
If your off-Amazon orders ship through Multi-Channel Fulfillment, Target Plus orders need their own route from your warehouse or a 3PL.
How does Target Plus integration work?
Target's checklist says sellers integrate through an approved Channel Partner. Its service provider directory currently lists twelve, all named in the FAQ on this page. Partner pricing varies and is paid on top of Target's referral rate.
The alternative is direct integration against Target's published seller, order and item taxonomy APIs. To qualify, you need a dedicated technical team in the U.S. that can build all the required feeds within 30 days and keep them running, meet the response times in Target's Incident Severity Grid, and train the operations team that runs the account. Target won't count contractors or temps as that team, and the API keys can't leave your payroll. If you meet every condition, tell your acquisition contact you want to integrate by API.
So no outside developer, us included, should hold your Target Plus API credentials. Most brands use a Channel Partner for the connection and run the operations around it on systems they control.
What does a Target Plus order really cost?
The referral rate depends on the category and, in several categories, on the item price. Target's current schedule runs from 6% for computers to 15%, and any category it does not list pays 15%. Target takes it from what the shopper pays for the item once discounts are applied, not counting tax or shipping. Around it sit costs the seller carries: the 5% Circle Card discount, which Target applies before the referral rate; free shipping over $35 and on Circle Card orders; free mail-in return shipping plus return service fees; Channel Partner fees; and your own pick, pack and carrier costs.
A SKU with a healthy margin on Amazon can turn negative on Target Plus once a Circle Card discount, a free-shipping order just over $35 and a return land on it. Model contribution margin per SKU before you choose the launch assortment.
How does Growth OS run Target Plus operations?
Growth OS does not replace your Channel Partner. It runs the operations on either side of it, on your own accounts, with the Target Plus rules configured or custom-built on top of the base. Custom work is yours, and the base is licensed to you. For an Amazon-first brand, three pieces need the most work:
- Stock Target can ship. Growth OS keeps FBA units out of the feed and sends only warehouse and 3PL stock, with buffers, to the Channel Partner.
- Orders on a clock. Each order routes to a U.S. location on UPS, USPS or OnTrac with a ship-by timer. See order routing.
- Returns and margin. Mail-in and palletized store returns are matched to orders and fed into 3PL reconciliation. Margin is tracked per order: the referral rate plus whichever of the Circle Card discount, free shipping and return costs apply to it, and a share of partner fees, so you see what each SKU earns.
Target Plus is one of the 20+ marketplaces we have shipped integrations for, and the multichannel layer draws on Seller7, our seller OS for 700+ sellers. Custom connectors between your systems and your Channel Partner are handed over with the code.
Is your operation ready for Target Plus?
A quick test: could you ship tomorrow's Target Plus orders within 24 business hours without Amazon's network, take in a pallet of store returns, and say what each SKU earns after the Circle Card discount? If not, fix it before the 75-day onboarding clock starts.
The Ops Gap Diagnostic starts with a free Quick Scan of your top three Amazon gaps; the paid Deep Diagnostic covers every channel you sell on. The base system is Growth OS.
Frequently asked questions
How do I apply to sell on Target Plus?
Apply at plus.target.com with your company details and the items you want to list. Target checks the assortment against its category strategy and aims to respond within 30 days; its FAQ puts the typical acquisition process at 3 to 6 weeks before a 75-day onboarding.
How does Target Plus work?
Vetted third-party brands and authorized resellers list items on Target.com and the Target app, with one seller per SKU. The seller ships every order from the U.S., handles returns and funds Target's guest promises, and Target takes a referral rate on each completed sale.
What are considered Target Plus items?
Products listed and shipped by a Target Plus partner rather than by Target itself. They appear in Target.com search results alongside Target's own assortment, and Target can remove items it judges unproductive.
Who are the approved Target Plus integration partners?
Target's service provider directory lists Acenda, Akeneo, Base.com, ChannelEngine, Feedonomics, Goflow, Mirakl Connect, Rithum, Rokt Catalog, Shopify Marketplace Connect, StoreAutomator and Zentail as Channel Partners. Check the directory before you choose, since Target maintains the list.
Does Target Plus have an API?
Yes. Target publishes specs for its seller, order and item taxonomy APIs, but connecting directly is reserved for brands with a dedicated U.S.-based technical team that can build every required feed within 30 days and maintain it, meet Target's incident response times, and train the operations team that runs the account. Contractors and temps don't count, and the API keys can't leave your payroll. A brand that qualifies tells its acquisition contact it wants to integrate by API.
What does it cost to sell on Target Plus?
There is no monthly seller fee. Target charges a referral rate set by category and, in some categories, by item price (6% to 15% on its current schedule), taken from what the shopper pays for the item after discounts, leaving out tax and shipping. The seller also pays for the Circle Card discount, free shipping over $35, return shipping and any Channel Partner fees.
